Customer wanted to have a plush River Otter that represented their mascot for their business and could not find one they liked that was mass produced and they wanted it to be able to wear sunglasses that would stay on if it gotten thrown in the river during an educational event.
I was given a plush River Otter that was already made. Customer wanted a few enhancements such as black whiskers instead of white, a smaller size from the original, different style tail, and the ability to stand up on four legs.
I took the already made otter and started drawing my pattern based on what the customer wanted and created two prototypes first.
I then met with the customer and showed them the prototypes and asked for their feedback. I took note of their suggestions and created the final pattern.
After gathering the material the customer wanted, I started sewing the body of the otter first. I created dart seems on the belly pieces where the legs connected to the body to allow the otter to stand up and attached the tail pieces to each side body to have a consistent seem. I then moved onto the head piece by cutting out five pieces of fabric and a snout. I made the snout with three dart seems (one one each corner and one in the bottom center to give the ability for it to poke out to hold the glasses on the nose.
Once I assembled the head piece, I added the safety eyes and nose. I then stuffed the snout piece with stuffing and cut a circular piece of fabric and sewed around the snout on the inside giving it even more ability to poke out from the face. I then attached the head to the body and added the elastic once I put the glasses into place. I moved onto adding the whiskers to the snout once stuffed by inserting a needle with a little bit of whisker and tying a knot and pulling it tight until I added enough whiskers to the face.
Last but not least, I stuffed the rest of the otter from the belly pieces and closed it up with a ladder stitch.
Feel free to contact me for more details if you or someone you know would like me to create a project like this for you.
